"Think about it; when you send a Facebook message, do people save and treasure it? Do they print out your tweet and stick it to the front of their fridge? Do they pass it around their friends and family? No. But they do that with a postcard. Because it’s more mindful, thoughtful and loving."

Welcome. I am Briga Saulė,

ABOUT ME

I grew up in Soviet Lithuania. Back in those days the arrival of mail from the West was controlled watchfully, while domestic letters circulated freely and in abundance. People travelled to countries within the USSR borders and made new friends they could keep in touch with. So on personal occasions and public holidays, every single mail box overflowed with postcards. And each of mine brought me enormous joy. Preserved in a glass jar I carried this joy with me to Ireland, where I’ve kept it in a yellow woolly hat for the last 20 years…

As a modern culture we are rapidly replacing traditional mail delivery with alternatives. We are transitioning between customary means of communication and digital and social media methods. Perhaps the latter is more economical, convenient and faster, but what we may be forgetting (and I beg you don’t say ‘don’t care about’) is the actual tactile connection between writer and reader, those two kindred souls.

I adore this connection.

I enjoy holding the same physical material that the sender touched. I enjoy discovering the additional meaning invisibly attached to it. But perhaps most of all, I am grateful to be reminded of the importance of taking a moment to share your heart with someone else every day. It is vital to stay soul-connected, for that is the one truly meaningful connection there is, in my eyes.

These ideas have inspired me to create this delicate and affordable art.

I wish for these postcards to find new life in your hands. I wish that you’ll send them travelling to multiply kindness and joy around our beautiful planet by supporting one another through this challenging but wonder-full journey that is Life.

This is just one way of making a world a better place.

Stay in touch,

Briga Saulė

    WHAT I WATCH

    #

As you've probably noticed, I'm a Film Geek... I'm heavily into Directors and their works and I'm always interested in what Directors people tend to like.

My favourites are Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Terry Gilliam, Alfred Hitchcock, Ken Russell, Gaspar Noe, Andrei Tarkovsky, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Kenneth Anger, Francis Ford Coppola.

  • MUSIC

    WHAT I LISTEN

    #

The wonderful group from Liverpool - John, Paul, George and Ringo - The Beatles, is in my opinion one of the best things that have happened in music in the twentieth century.

I also love The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, The Clash, Sonic Youth, Steely Dan, Creedence Clearwater Revival and classical music.

    WHAT I READ

    #

I came up with a list of 8 books that I consider must-reads from both contemporary and classic literature:

To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee), The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald), Emma (Jane Austen), Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte), 1984 (George Orwell), Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury), Catch-22 (Joseph Heller), Cloud Atlas (David Mitchell).

    WHAT I SHOOT

    #

As a photographer, I like to question everything. I like to understand how things work, why they are how they are, and how it affects what I do.

One of my latest ponderings really got me thinking, so I ran it past US based photographer Chase Jarvis for his opinion. Not only did he have his own take, but he also felt compelled to post the question on his blog.

MY BLOG

Writing was my first love. In my early teens I wrote complex diaries and school essays that made my literature teacher go soft in the knees. With her encouragement my ambition to become a writer grew like Jack’s Beanstalk under the sunshine. I tried to write a novel, however I never managed to figure out what should happen to that provincial girl and her white cat in a big foreign city. In my college years, I regularly wrote theses for my fellow student friends for pocket money. Nowadays I write postcards to strangers, mile-long letters to families and friends, and I trade short sweet notes with waitresses for their smiles…

We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward...

How come on a such a beautiful Irish summer's day, darkness can cover your mind, you say? I don’t know, but it does. Maybe it’s that Cancerian nature of mine, which can leave me feeling sad with no reason. Or maybe it’s the ego playing out its tricks again, preventing me from enjoying life without expecting a thing. I read the other day wise ones saying that we are so very much into controlling the flow of our lives that anything that doesn’t....
